Is a foreign degree worth it if you plan to come back to India? Most blogs say a master’s abroad “pays for itself in a few years”, then quote one consultancy’s estimate. We looked for a public dataset of what returnees actually earn in India and found none. So this guide sticks to what can be checked: official costs, stay-back rules, audited Indian placement data, and a break-even table you can run on your own loan. If you are still choosing a country, start with our country-by-country guide to studying abroad in 2026.
The short version:
- A foreign master’s pays back only if it adds a salary premium in India, or if working abroad first lets you clear the loan on a foreign salary.
- The cheap routes (a tuition-free German public master’s, an online degree) change the maths more than any salary claim.
- The same loan can pay back in 3 years or never. It depends on one number: the extra take-home pay the degree gives you each year.
1. The real cost of a foreign master’s in 2026
Tuition is only the first line. The table below holds only figures printed by governments or the institutions themselves, checked in October 2026. We have left out “average cost” ranges from agency blogs because they rarely agree with each other.
| Country | What the official source says |
|---|---|
| US | No national fee: each university sets its own tuition. After graduating, OPT allows 12 months of work, and eligible STEM degrees can add a 24-month extension (USCIS). |
| UK | Student visa fee £558 (GOV.UK). You must show £1,529 a month for London or £1,171 elsewhere, for up to 9 months (GOV.UK funds rules). From 30 November 2026 that rises to £1,570 and £1,203 (HC 584). The Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026 and 18 months from 1 January 2027; it costs £937 plus a healthcare surcharge of usually £1,035 a year. |
| Canada | Average international graduate tuition is projected at CAD 24,028 for 2025/26, in inflation-adjusted June 2025 dollars (Statistics Canada). A single applicant must show CAD 23,448 for living costs from 1 September 2026 (IRCC). A master’s of 8 months or more can earn a PGWP of up to 3 years if you meet the other conditions. |
| Germany | “Generally no fees” for most master’s courses at state universities. Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students EUR 1,500 a semester. The semester contribution runs EUR 70 to 430, and DAAD puts living costs at EUR 900 to 1,200 a month (DAAD). Visa proof of funds is EUR 11,904 a year, or EUR 992 a month (DAAD requirements). |
| Australia | The Temporary Graduate (485) visa charge rose to A$5,750 on 1 July 2026 (Study Australia). The student visa needs proof of living-cost funds; the amount is updated by Home Affairs, so use its Document Checklist Tool for today’s figure. |
Convert every number at the day’s rate, not last year’s. For the Canada side of the picture, our explainer on the Canada student visa cap covers what has changed for Indian applicants.
Costs that sit outside the fee page
- Forex and TCS. From 1 April 2026, self-funded education remittances above ₹10 lakh a year attract 2% TCS. A remittance funded by a loan from a financial institution carries none (Standard Chartered notice). Bank markups are separate, and we break them down in the hidden costs families do not budget for.
- Floating interest. Most overseas education loans float with a benchmark. The RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on 7 October 2026 (SCC Online), and our piece on how RBI rate decisions reach your EMI explains the pass-through.
- The year you do not earn. A two-year master’s also costs you two years of Indian salary. Most payback claims forget it.
2. What returnees earn in India: the salary data that exists
Here is the awkward part. Salary-sharing platforms and official surveys report pay by role, employer and experience. In our search we found no public source that isolates what a foreign degree adds on top. Any article giving you “returnee salary by sector” is working from a private sample or an estimate.
What is public and audited comes from management schools, which makes it the cleanest benchmark a foreign MBA has to beat:
- ISB, class of 2026: 808 graduates, average salary ₹37.29 lakh a year, up about 11% on the previous cohort and 156% above the cohort’s pre-ISB average (ISB press release). Working backwards, that implies a pre-ISB average near ₹14.6 lakh and an uplift near ₹22.7 lakh a year.
- ISB fee: ₹34.48 lakh plus GST for the 2027–28 programme (ISB fees page).
- IIM Ahmedabad, 2025: median ₹34.59 lakh, mean ₹35.50 lakh. IIMA reports “maximum earning potential”, defined as the actual cash compensation a student can earn in the first year (IIMA).
Read those with care. They are averages for people who got into a very selective programme, so part of the uplift would have happened anyway. Still, they are among the few audited before-and-after pay numbers we could find, so any foreign programme should be compared against them.
One more data point on attitudes, not pay: the CFA Institute’s 2026 Graduate Outlook Survey found 66% of Indian respondents plan to return to India for work after studying abroad, and 69% think professional certifications offer more career value than postgraduate degrees (Business Today). That is what graduates believe. It is not proof of what employers pay.
3. Payback period of a foreign degree: years to recover the cost
Since nobody publishes the premium, the honest method is to turn the question around. Ask how much extra you need to earn each year for the loan to make sense.
Our assumptions: you borrow the full amount, repay over 10 years at a sample rate of 10% (your sanctioned rate will differ), and the “premium” is your extra after-tax pay compared with what you would earn at the same age without the degree. The totals below are the sum of all EMIs.
| Loan | EMI (10 years, 10%) | Total repaid | Premium ₹4 lakh/yr | ₹8 lakh/yr | ₹12 lakh/yr | ₹16 lakh/yr |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹30 lakh | ₹39,645 | ₹47.6 lakh | 11.9 yrs | 5.9 yrs | 4.0 yrs | 3.0 yrs |
| ₹50 lakh | ₹66,075 | ₹79.3 lakh | 19.8 yrs | 9.9 yrs | 6.6 yrs | 5.0 yrs |
| ₹80 lakh | ₹1,05,721 | ₹126.9 lakh | 31.7 yrs | 15.9 yrs | 10.6 yrs | 7.9 yrs |
This is the best case. It ignores interest that builds up while you study and the salary you skip. Both push the real payback later.
Staying abroad for a while is what bends the curve. Time on a foreign salary is the difference between a loan that hangs over you and one you clear early. The US allows 12 months of OPT plus 24 months for eligible STEM degrees, Canada’s PGWP can run to 3 years, and the UK Graduate visa shrinks to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. If your plan needs those years, say so in your budget. Our Germany vs Canada vs Australia comparison sets the work-rights side by side.
Payback period of a foreign degree by sector
We will not print a payback figure per sector, because that needs a returnee salary dataset that does not exist. What we can do is show what each sector’s payback depends on, using the checked facts above.
| Sector | What the degree competes with in India | What decides payback |
|---|---|---|
| Tech | An Indian degree plus work experience, or a cheap online degree | Outlay is small for online routes and larger for on-campus ones; years of foreign work after the degree repay the loan. |
| Consulting and management | ISB and IIM programmes with audited placement data | The premium must beat the ISB uplift of roughly ₹22.7 lakh a year at a far higher cost. |
| Finance | Professional certifications | 69% of surveyed graduates rate certifications above postgraduate degrees; the cost gap is large. |
| Healthcare | The Indian licensing route | A foreign medical qualification does not skip registration rules; see section 5. |
| Design and creative | A portfolio and Indian design schools | We found no public outcome data, so we will not invent a payback. |
4. Where a foreign degree pays off: tech, consulting, research
Tech: when the outlay is small or the stay-back is long
Georgia Tech’s online MS in Computer Science needs 30 credit hours, which is 10 courses (OMSCS). Its Fall 2026 fee schedule lists tuition of $227 per credit hour, so $6,810 for the degree, plus an online learning fee of $212 a semester for under four credit hours or $531 for four or more (Georgia Tech bursar). At one course a semester that is about $8,930 in total; at two courses a semester, about $9,465. You keep your salary the whole time.
That is a very different bet from a full-time on-campus degree. Fees are subject to change, and recognition of an online foreign degree for a government job or a PhD in India is a separate check, so confirm it with the body that matters to you before paying.
Research and technical master’s: the Germany arithmetic
Take DAAD’s figures: living costs of EUR 900 to 1,200 a month over 24 months is EUR 21,600 to 28,800. Add four semester contributions at EUR 70 to 430 each (EUR 280 to 1,720) and a two-year master’s at a no-tuition state university comes to about EUR 21,900 to 30,500, before flights and insurance. In Baden-Württemberg, add EUR 6,000 for four semesters of the non-EU fee. Compare that with the ₹30 lakh row in the table and you can see why Germany keeps appearing in “best ROI” lists.
Management: only against a very high bar
INSEAD charges EUR 109,860 in tuition for both its August 2026 and January 2027 intakes, and estimates living costs at EUR 30,000 in Fontainebleau or EUR 32,000 in Singapore for the ten-month programme (INSEAD). That is EUR 139,860 to 141,860. At an illustrative ₹100 per euro, it is about ₹1.4 crore, more than four times ISB’s fee, and the multiple only grows at a higher rate. The extra roughly ₹1.05 crore has to come back as pay on top of what an ISB graduate earns. It can happen, but you would be betting on it with no audited data behind you. For help weighing degrees by field, see which degrees actually matter in 2026.
5. Where it does not pay: sectors with no proven premium
- High loan, low premium. Look at the ₹80 lakh row: with a ₹4 lakh annual premium, it takes over 31 years. No career plan survives that.
- Licensed professions. Indian citizens with a primary medical qualification from abroad must pass the NMC’s screening test (FMGE) before registering to practise. The degree does not replace the licensing step, so confirm the current rules on nmc.org.in.
- Fields where a cheaper credential competes. If a certification or an Indian programme gets you the same job, a foreign degree must justify its cost on something else, such as access to a foreign employer.
- Plans that depend on one visa outcome. The UK Graduate visa is shrinking, and Australia’s 485 now costs A$5,750 to apply for. A plan that only works if a stay-back visa succeeds is a plan with a single point of failure.
6. Alternatives: ISB, IIMs, online global degrees and foreign campuses in India
- ISB or an IIM. ISB’s fee of ₹34.48 lakh plus GST and its 2026 average of ₹37.29 lakh give you an audited benchmark. ISB’s own fees page lists loan partners with floating rates, so compare current offers.
- Online global degrees. The Georgia Tech example above shows how far the outlay can drop when you keep working.
- Foreign campuses in India. On 3 August 2026 the Education Ministry told the Lok Sabha that UGC has issued 16 Letters of Intent to 15 foreign institutions from Australia, Italy, the UK and the USA, for campuses in Bengaluru, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Mumbai and Chennai. Their qualifications are treated as equivalent to Indian ones with no further equivalence needed, and only institutions in the global top 500 are eligible (PIB). A Letter of Intent is an in-principle approval, so check that your campus is actually admitting students for your course.
A five-minute test before you borrow
- Write down your total outlay: fees, living costs, visa costs, forex markup and the salary you give up.
- Find your row in the table. How many years do you get if the premium is half of what you hope for?
- List the stay-back years your visa really gives you, and what you can save on a foreign salary.
- Find the Indian alternative for the same job and price it the same way.
- If the plan only works at your best-case premium, wait or choose a cheaper route.
7. FAQ
Do Indian employers pay more for foreign degrees?
We could not find a public dataset that answers this across the board, and we will not guess. What is documented is that selective Indian management programmes publish audited pay data, and we found no foreign programme publishing returnee pay in India. Employers pay for the role and level, so judge the degree by the premium you can actually negotiate.
How long does it take to recover the cost of an MS abroad?
It depends on the loan and your extra annual take-home pay. A ₹50 lakh loan at 10% over 10 years costs ₹79.3 lakh in total, which is about 6.6 years at a ₹12 lakh premium and 9.9 years at ₹8 lakh. Years worked abroad after graduation shorten that.
Which fields have the best ROI for returnees?
No public data ranks fields by returnee ROI. The structural answer is the routes with the smallest outlay: tuition-free public master’s in Germany and online degrees you study while working. Those lower the bar in the table before any salary enters the picture.
Is a degree from a foreign university’s India campus valid?
Under the UGC’s 2023 regulations, the government says such qualifications are treated as equivalent to Indian ones with no further equivalence needed. Check that the campus has been fully set up and is admitting students for your programme.
The bottom line
A foreign degree is worth it when the maths survives your worst-case premium, not your best. Cheap routes and long stay-back periods make it work far more often than a prestige name does. Check every figure on the official pages linked above before you apply, because fees and visa rules change.
