Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026, and every family has the same argument: gold ETF vs digital gold vs physical gold, which one deserves your money? First, a correction to the popular story. Gold is not at a record right now. It is about 19% below where it stood in late January. Our investing roadmap for Indian beginners shows where gold fits in a plan. This guide helps you pick the form.
The quick answer:
- Cheapest way to invest: a gold ETF. No GST, a yearly fee of 0.34% to 0.81%, and long-term tax after 12 months.
- No demat account: a gold fund of funds, which takes 24 months for long-term tax.
- Weddings, gifts and wearing it: hallmarked jewellery or a coin. You pay more, and that is the price of owning something physical.
- Digital gold: SEBI says it sits outside its purview. Keep the amount small.
1. Gold Price in October 2026: How Far Below the January Record
The India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) publishes the daily benchmark rates. On 23 October 2026, its 999 gold closed at Rs 1,41,630 per 10 grams and 22-carat (916) gold at Rs 1,29,733. Both exclude GST and making charges.
On 29 January, IBJA’s 999 gold closed at Rs 1,75,340. So today’s rate is about 19% lower.
The dollar price tells the same story. The World Gold Council (WGC) puts the record LBMA Gold Price PM at US$5,405 on 29 January, with spot gold touching US$5,595.47 intraday. By 25 June the LBMA price had fallen to US$4,001.80, a drop of about 26%. Spot gold closed at roughly US$4,021 an ounce on 23 October, down 3.6% on the week as higher oil prices revived inflation worries and bets on higher US interest rates. We explain that chain in our global economy explainer.
Why Indian prices still feel high
Two things are working against Indian buyers. The first is gold import duty in 2026. The total duty on gold rose from 6% to 15% in mid-May, and the WGC says that lifted domestic prices. It expects the hike to trim jewellery, bar and coin demand by 50 to 60 tonnes this year, about 10%.
The second is the rupee. The WGC notes it lost about 4% against the dollar in April to June. A weaker rupee raises the rupee price of every ounce, even when the dollar price falls.
What Indians actually bought in April to June
The WGC’s India report for the second quarter shows buyers switching away from jewellery:
- Total demand: about 131 tonnes, down 5.9% from a year earlier. Spending hit a record Rs 1.98 lakh crore because prices were so high.
- Jewellery: 75.1 tonnes, down 15.4%.
- Bars and coins: 50.3 tonnes, up 8.9%.
- Gold ETFs: 3.6 tonnes of inflows, after a record 19.9 tonnes in January to March.
- Digital gold: an estimated 4.8 tonnes, down from 6.5 tonnes in the first quarter.
2. Should You Buy Gold on Dhanteras 2026? What History Shows
Gold rose 67% in dollar terms in 2025, a multi-decade record, and set 53 record LBMA prices along the way. It closed the year at US$4,368. At roughly US$4,021 today, a buyer from the end of 2025 is about 8% down in dollars.
A record does not mean a fall is coming, and a dip does not mean a bottom. Gold peaked near US$1,900 in September 2011, slid to about US$1,050 by late 2015, and made its next record only in 2020. Nobody buying in 2011 could have known that.
So skip the question “is today the bottom?” Ask a better one: “how much can I hold if the price drops another 10% after I buy?” If the answer makes you uneasy, buy less.
What the World Gold Council has said
We will not give you a price target. The WGC’s mid-year outlook offers scenarios, and it says plainly they are “not price forecasts but hypothetical illustrations.” For the second half of 2026:
- Base case: gold trades within 5% either side of US$4,100.
- Upside: a rise of 5% to 20%, with a move to around US$4,500 and, on a strong signal, towards US$5,000.
- Downside: a consolidation of 5% to 15% lower.
Spot gold at about US$4,021 sits inside the base-case band. That tells you where gold is, not where it is going.
A calmer way to buy
Treat Dhanteras as the day you start, not the day you finish. Buy a part now and add the rest over the following months, through an ETF or a gold fund SIP. If prices rise, you already own some. If they fall, you buy more cheaply.
3. Gold ETF vs Digital Gold vs Physical Gold: The Cost Table
The sticker price of gold is the same for everyone. What differs is what you lose on the way in, while you hold it, and on the way out. Here is the comparison for jewellery, coins, gold ETFs, gold funds and digital gold.
| Form | GST on purchase | Other buying cost | Yearly cost | When you sell | Protection |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jewellery | 3% on the full value, making charge included (ready-made pieces) | Making charge, set by each jeweller | Locker or insurance, if you pay for it | Buyback terms differ by jeweller | BIS hallmark with a HUID code |
| Coins and bars | 3% | Dealer or minting premium | Locker or insurance, if you pay for it | Dealer’s buyback price | Depends on the seller |
| Gold ETF | None on units | Brokerage, plus a demat account | 0.34% to 0.81% (median 0.50%) | Exchange price, which can sit slightly above or below NAV | SEBI-regulated mutual fund |
| Gold fund of funds | None | None, and no demat account needed | Regular plans 0.25% to 1.00%, direct plans 0.06% to 0.64% | Redeem at NAV | SEBI-regulated mutual fund |
| Digital gold | 3% | The platform’s buy-sell spread | Varies by platform | The platform’s sell price | Outside SEBI’s purview |
A few notes on the table
- Jewellery GST: on off-the-shelf ornaments, the council’s FAQ says the whole price is taxed at 3% and no separate labour charge should appear. If a jeweller makes a piece to your design, gold is taxed at 3% and labour at 5%.
- Hallmark: mandatory BIS hallmarking covers 14, 18, 20, 22, 23 and 24 carat. Each piece carries a six-character HUID code. Check it before you pay.
- Gold ETFs: the units are bought and sold on the stock exchange. HDFC Mutual Fund’s leaflet says gold ETFs hold physical gold of 99.5% fineness or above. Fund documents say they track the domestic price of gold, so the import duty is inside the price you pay.
- Gold funds: a fund of funds buys a gold ETF, so the ETF’s own cost sits underneath the fund’s expense ratio.
The Rs 1 lakh test
Say you hand over Rs 1,00,000. How much gold actually lands in your hands? This is an illustration. We have assumed a 10% making charge on jewellery, because jewellers set their own.
The coin and digital gold figures are Rs 1,00,000 divided by 1.03, because 3% GST comes off the top. Jewellery is Rs 1,00,000 divided by 1.133 (a 10% making charge, then 3% GST on the total). Roughly Rs 11,700 of your money never becomes gold.
That is not an argument against jewellery. You are paying for craft and for something you can wear. Just do not call it your cheapest investment.
What the expense ratio costs in rupees
At the median gold ETF fee of 0.50%, Rs 1,00,000 costs Rs 500 a year. At the highest, 0.81%, it costs Rs 810. Hold for six years at 0.50% and the fees add up to roughly the 3% GST a coin loses on day one. The difference is that you can leave an ETF whenever you like, and it carries no making charge.
Money is already flowing this way. AMFI’s September 2026 report shows 26 gold ETFs with 1.27 crore folios, net inflows of Rs 4,450.61 crore in the month, and net assets of Rs 1.86 lakh crore.
One caution. ETFs carry the same quirks we covered in our piece on hidden costs in index funds: the unit price can drift from the fund’s NAV, and thinly traded funds have wider gaps. Look at daily trading volume before you buy.
Whichever form you pick, the rupee decides part of your result. The same dollar gold costs more when the currency slides, as we explain in why currencies rise and fall.
4. Tax When You Sell Each Form of Gold
Buying and holding gold attracts no income tax. Tax arrives when you sell at a profit. The holding period that makes a gain long-term depends on the form:
| Form | Long-term if held | Tax on long-term gain | Tax on short-term gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold ETF | More than 12 months | 12.5%, no indexation | Your slab rate |
| Gold fund of funds | More than 24 months | 12.5%, no indexation | Your slab rate |
| Jewellery, coins and bars | More than 24 months | 12.5%, no indexation | Your slab rate |
| Digital gold | More than 24 months | 12.5%, no indexation | Your slab rate |
An example. You sell gold ETF units after 14 months with a gain of Rs 50,000. Tax is 12.5%, which is Rs 6,250, plus 4% cess of Rs 250, so Rs 6,500. Sell a coin after 14 months and the same gain is short-term, taxed at your slab rate. At the 30% slab, that is Rs 15,000 plus cess.
So the ETF’s clock runs out twice as fast. If you invest through a fund SIP, each instalment is treated as a separate purchase with its own 24-month clock. For how the new law treats the rest of your income, see our complete income tax guide.
What about Sovereign Gold Bonds?
There is nothing to subscribe to this Dhanteras. The last SGB series was issued in February 2024, and the government has signalled it will not keep issuing them.
5. Is Digital Gold Safe? SEBI’s Position
On 8 November 2025, SEBI issued press release 70/2025, “Caution to public regarding dealing in ‘Digital Gold’.” The regulator said these products are neither notified as securities nor regulated as commodity derivatives, so they sit outside its purview. It added that none of the investor protections of the securities market apply, and that they can carry counterparty and operational risks.
Read that carefully. It is a caution, not a ban. SEBI did not name any platform, and it did not say digital gold is illegal. It said nobody is overseeing it the way a mutual fund is overseen.
SEBI pointed investors to three regulated routes instead:
- Gold ETFs offered by mutual funds, bought through a SEBI-registered intermediary.
- Electronic Gold Receipts traded on stock exchanges.
- Exchange-traded commodity derivative contracts, also through a registered intermediary.
If you still use digital gold, keep it for small top-ups. Know who holds the metal, where it is stored, and how your units are separated from the company’s own assets. Also remember the 3% GST on purchase and the platform’s buy-sell spread. Those costs are paid whether or not the platform is sound.
6. How Much Gold Should Be in Your Portfolio? The 5-15% Rule
No regulator sets a number. The common rule of thumb among Indian financial planners is 5% to 15% of your investments. Morningstar India’s Dhaval Kapadia suggested 5% to 10% in a 2017 Business Standard interview. Treat it as a range, not a formula.
- Towards 5%: a long horizon and a high comfort with equity swings.
- Towards 10%: a balanced portfolio and a mid-career income.
- Towards 15%: a conservative portfolio or a retirement a few years away.
Count the gold you already own. Take a family with Rs 20 lakh of investments and a 10% target, which is Rs 2 lakh. If your family locker already holds Rs 3 lakh of jewellery, you are above the range before buying a gram. In that case Dhanteras can be a ritual, a small coin, rather than a portfolio decision.
Gold can cushion a portfolio when other assets stumble, but 2026 has shown it can fall sharply too. That is the reason for a cap.
7. FAQ: Gold ETF vs Digital Gold vs Physical Gold
Is it a good time to buy gold this Dhanteras?
Gold is not at a record. IBJA’s 999 gold is about 19% below its 29 January level, and the WGC’s second-half base case is a range of 5% either side of US$4,100. Nobody can call the next move. A staged purchase, part on Dhanteras and part over the following months, avoids betting on one day.
Is digital gold regulated?
Not by SEBI. Its November 2025 caution says digital gold is neither a notified security nor a regulated commodity derivative, so no securities-market investor protection applies. Buying it is still legal, and purchases carry 3% GST.
Which form of gold has the lowest cost and tax?
A gold ETF. It has no GST on units, a yearly fee of 0.34% to 0.81%, and a 12-month wait for long-term tax at 12.5%. Coins and digital gold lose 3% to GST up front, jewellery adds making charges, and all three need 24 months for long-term tax.
When is Dhanteras 2026?
Friday, 6 November 2026. Some panchang sources list gold-buying windows that run into Saturday morning, 7 November, so follow your family’s local panchang for timings.
How much gold should I own?
Planners commonly suggest 5% to 15% of your investments, and that includes jewellery you already hold. To see where gold sits next to equity, debt and your emergency fund, work through our guide on how much of your money should go where.
