The skies over parts of Europe went dark on the evening of August 12, 2026, as a total solar eclipse swept across the Northern Hemisphere for the first time in nearly 3 decades. Millions of people across Greenland, Iceland, Spain and a small sliver of northeastern Portugal witnessed the moon slide directly in front of the sun, blocking its light entirely for up to 2 minutes and 18 seconds.

This was the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since August 1999, when the path of totality crossed parts of France, Germany and the United Kingdom. For an entire generation of Europeans, this was their first chance to experience totality on home soil.

Where the Eclipse Was Visible

The moon’s shadow, or umbra, first touched down at sunrise over a remote stretch of northern Siberia in Russia. From there, it raced south across the Arctic Ocean, passing within just 100 kilometers of the North Pole before sweeping over eastern Greenland.

The shadow then crossed the North Atlantic and clipped the western coast of Iceland. Residents of Reykjavik got roughly 60 seconds of totality during the late afternoon, making the capital city one of the most accessible viewing spots on the entire path.

The real spectacle, though, played out across Spain. The path of totality entered the Iberian Peninsula from the northwest through Galicia and cut diagonally across the country’s northern half. Major cities including A Coruña, Oviedo, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca all fell within the zone of total darkness. Along the centerline near Oviedo, totality lasted approximately 1 minute and 48 seconds.

A tiny corner of northeastern Portugal also experienced totality, though for a much shorter duration.

For cities just outside the path, the experience was still dramatic. In Madrid, over 99% of the sun was obscured in a deep partial eclipse. Barcelona saw a similar level of coverage. Across the United Kingdom and Ireland, viewers witnessed a partial eclipse with roughly 90 to 96% of the sun hidden behind the moon, the most coverage seen from the British Isles since 1999.

The partial eclipse extended far beyond Europe. Across much of North America, from Alaska down through Canada and into the northern United States, observers saw the moon take a small bite out of the solar disk during the afternoon hours. Parts of northwestern Africa also caught a partial view in the evening.

A Sunset Eclipse Like No Other

What made this eclipse stand out from many others was its timing. In Spain, totality arrived around 8:30 p.m. local time, barely an hour before sunset. The sun was sitting low on the western horizon, just a few degrees above the landscape when the moon swallowed it whole.

This created what photographers and astronomers call a “golden hour eclipse.” The combination of a low sun, warm evening light and the sudden plunge into darkness made for scenes that were visually unlike any recent total eclipse. The darkened landscape beneath a corona glowing just above the horizon offered something even veteran eclipse chasers rarely get to see.

The Perseid Double Feature

August 12 delivered more than just an eclipse. By pure coincidence, the total solar eclipse fell on the same date as the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, one of the most reliable and popular annual meteor showers. The Perseids are caused by debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, a massive comet roughly 26 kilometers across.

Because a total solar eclipse requires a new moon, the night sky on August 12 was completely free of moonlight. That meant conditions for meteor watching after sunset were about as good as they get. Observers across Europe who watched the eclipse in the evening could simply wait for full darkness and then enjoy the Perseids under a pitch black sky.

Forecasters expected between 30 and 50 visible meteors per hour during the peak, with some estimates suggesting up to 100 per hour under exceptionally dark rural skies. The next time the Perseid peak will fall on a new moon night is not until 2045, making this a once in a generation pairing.

What Happens Next

This eclipse was not a standalone event for the region. Spain is set to witness another total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027, and that one will last significantly longer, with up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds of totality along the centerline in North Africa. An annular solar eclipse will follow on January 26, 2028, also visible from Spain and Portugal.

Together, these 3 eclipses form a rare trifecta for the Iberian Peninsula. After the 2028 event, Spain will not see another total solar eclipse until 2053.

Eye Safety Remains Critical

As with every solar eclipse, experts stressed that looking directly at the sun during the partial phases without certified eclipse glasses risks permanent eye damage. The only safe moment to view the sun without protection is during the brief window of totality itself, when the moon has fully covered the solar disk. Regular sunglasses do not provide adequate protection.

The total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 reminded millions of people across 3 continents what happens when the moon lines up perfectly between Earth and the sun. For those who stood in the path of totality, it was a memory that will last a lifetime.
